It was my dream to grow up, meet the perfect man, get married, have children and live happily ever after. I was raised by supporting parents and a loving community. I was not always the perfect daughter (none of us are), but I tried to be. I believed if I made good choices I could avoid heartache, struggle and my life would go just as I planned. I quickly learned that was not the case. Instead, I was lead on a path that would push me in ways I never thought possible.

I married young, thinking I was on track to forever happiness. But at just 22 my life changed. I was now divorced and a single mom. Being a single mom was hard. It was a challenge trying to find balance of motherhood, working and going to school. Even going on a date was a huge struggle. Being married to a broken man broke me. I lost all confidence in myself. I did not feel worthy, let alone attractive enough to find someone. Who would want to take on me, let alone my son?

I developed an eating disorder. As time went on my eating disorder became worse. It took over my thoughts and my days. There were many times I felt like giving up and no longer wanted to live. The only thing that got me through was my son. I was all he had. I was the one to show him how to be, how to live, how to behave and how to have faith. This meant I needed to change. I needed to find myself again. I needed to find the strength to become the mother he deserved. I needed to become a woman of confidence that was deserving of a man strong enough to be his father.

I mustered up the courage to ask for help. I got counseling and dug deep into my faith. This process did not happen overnight, but with the help of trained professionals, friends and family I was able to overcome my fears and struggles.

A few years later I met the most amazing man who makes me feel beautiful and special. I am no longer broken but feel loved and validated. I feel grateful everyday for the chance I had to change and become the mother my son needed and the woman I knew I could be.
